SAP Help Step by step guide to install a HANA express virtual machine on your local PC or laptop for free

SAP Hana Express virtual machine installation - Part 3

Now you have installed the VMware player and downloaded the HANA express virtual machine it's time to use the player to open the virtual machine.

Step 1 - Execute VMware workstation player

We are now ready to use the VMware player to open and use the HANA express virtual machine. Click on the icon on your desktop or start bar

If this is the first time you have used the player you will be asked to enter a license or email address. You do not need a license simply enter an email address to use for free for non-commercial use. Then click finish and the player should be ready to use

Step 2 - Import virtual machine

The Workstation player should load and look something like this. We now need to open a virtual machine using the file we have just downloaded in the previous section. First click the open a virtual machine link

Then choose the hxe.ova file you download using the HANA express download manager (also notice the hxexsa.ova file, this is the server plus applications virtual machine if you dowloaded it). Dont worry about it for now though.

Enter a name for the virtual machine, i have just left it as hxe

The VMplayer will then import the hxe file

Step 3 - Open the HANA express virtual machine

Now choose the imported virtual machine

and then press "play virtual machine"

The machine will now start and you will see the SUSE logo, which is a particular favourite of my 3-year-old daughter and we have got a number of these chameleons kicking around the house. Freebies from the various SAP user groups I have been too and like all children, she likes these toys more than most of the ones that have actually cost money to buy, but hey ho whatever keeps her happy.

Anyway back to the HANA system, which should have reached the login screen. This is where the fun starts but also we are almost there. Just need to login, change a few passwords and thats the database system running. I will then show you how to install the SAP HANA studio / Eclipse to access this HANA database.
