SM37 SAP TCode - Overview of job selection

Background processing SAP screen

What is SM37 (Overview of job selection) and how is it used? Within an SAP system there are numerous transaction codes (TCode) that each serve different purposes and provide easy access to a variety of different functionality. One such TCode is SM37, which provides access to Overview of job selection / Background processing SAP screen functionality within R/3 SAP (Or S/4HANA) systems, depending on your version and release level.

Below for your convenience is a few details about this tcode including any standard documentation. In-order to use this transaction within your SAP system simply enter it into the command input box located in the top left hand corner of the SAP GUI, and press enter. You can also add additional command options such /o to trigger in new window..See full list of command options available.

execute SM37 tcode

Program Name: SAPLBTCH
Screen Number: 3000

SM37 Authorisation objects

In-order to be able to use a SAP transaction code you need to have the correct authorisations setup for your user ID. To check if you have the required level of authorisation to run this use tcode SU53 via a new session (i.e. /N). Simply execute SM37 and then execute /NSU53 immediately afterwards. A report of all authorisations checked will then be displayed...See check tcode authorisation for full details and screenshots of how to check what authorisations you are missing to use a tcode.

Understanding the functions of SM37: Job Overview screen

1. What is TCode SM37:
SM37 is a transaction code in SAP that allows users to access the "Job Overview" screen, where they can view and manage background jobs. Background jobs are crucial tasks scheduled to run automatically at specified intervals, without the need for user intervention. These jobs can include data uploads, report generation, database maintenance etc...

2. Monitoring and Managing Background Jobs:
Using SM37, SAP users can monitor the status and progress of background jobs across the entire system. The transaction provides a clear overview of scheduled, active, completed, and canceled jobs, helping administrators track job execution and identify any potential issues.

3. Job Analysis and Troubleshooting:
SM37 offers an array of features to analyze and troubleshoot background jobs effectively. Users can access detailed information about a particular job, including its job log, variant details, and job details. By analyzing the logs, errors, and performance metrics, users can diagnose and resolve issues promptly.

4. Restarting and Deleting Jobs:
In case of job failures or termination, SM37 enables users to restart or delete jobs selectively. This functionality saves time and effort, as it allows administrators to rectify issues quickly without having to reconfigure the entire job schedule.

5. Job Scheduling and Variant Management:
SM37 facilitates the scheduling of new background jobs and helps users manage job variants efficiently. Job variants are parameter sets that define different input values for a specific job. By assigning variants through SM37, users can execute the same job with various parameter combinations, streamlining the process and minimizing manual intervention.

6. Enhancing Performance and Optimization:
Efficient use of SM37 can significantly contribute to the overall performance optimization of the SAP system. By identifying resource-intensive or long-running jobs, administrators can fine-tune job schedules, prioritize critical tasks, and allocate resources effectively, ensuring optimal system performance.

7. Job Documentation and Reporting:
SM37 allows users to document background jobs, including job descriptions, schedules, and dependencies.

SAP GUI Support for tcode SM37

When a tcode is created you can select which SAP GUI it has support for from HTML, Java and the main Windows GUI you are probably most familiar with.
GUI for HTML is not selected
GUI for Java is not selected
GUI for Windows is selected

SAPGUI for HTML
SM37 does not support the HTML web based GUI. The SAP GUI for HTML generates HTML pages for each screen of the SAP transaction so that it can be executed within a standard web browser. Please note there are technical restrictions and possible incompatibility issues with certain browsers which means some transaction functionality may not function correctly.

SAPGUI for Java
SM37 does not support the Java based GUI. The SAP GUI for Java support provides more controls than the SAP GUI for HTML, but requires a plug-in to be downloaded and installed on the users PC so is less popular than the SAP GUI for HTML.

SAPGUI for windows
SM37 includes support for the Windows based GUI. Windows(WinGUI) support is the most popular option and transactions can be run under SAP GUI for Windows.
